Develop your firm's future leaders!
Register them for the
Leadership Development Series

Seven monthly morning programs begin October 3.

Presenters are key industry professionals. The seminars utilize a small group setting to maximize learning, interaction and exchange of ideas.

CERTIFICATE OF COMPLETION
Individuals who attend the entire series will receive a certificate of completion and be recognized at the All-Committee Business Dinner in May.

Each session is good for accruing continuing professional development credits.

“The biggest challenge facing A/E firms today is development of our future leaders. We had six of our emerging leaders attend the 2017-18 ACEC Leadership Development program and the feedback I received was extremely positive. In particular it helped them gain a broader perspective on the business aspects of consulting and we are already realizing the return on this investment in their leadership development.” --Larry Fox, President, OBEC Consulting Engineers

WHO SHOULD ATTEND
This series is ideal for project managers, designers and engineers who are:

  • Interested in a leadership track in their career
  • Shifting their focus from projects to organizational and financial goals of the firm
  • Challenged by competing priorities
  • Being asked to take on more responsibilities with the same resources
  • New to managing multiple or complex projects
  • New to managing people and teams

WORDS OF PRAISE
“Great content; good speakers; but the most valuable aspect was the chance to share experiences and collaborate with peers from other firms throughout the state.” –Nick Robertson, Division Manager - Structures, OBEC Consulting Engineers

“As engineers, we are well trained on how to provide designs that are both safe to the public and cost effective to the owners. However, college programs often lack courses on the business side of running an engineering firm such as contracts, managing people, limiting risk, time management, and business development. After going through the training, I can confidently say that the ACEC Leadership Development Series goes a long ways towards filling this knowledge gap and helping to guide young professionals.” --Jason Bock, PE, Associate, GRI

"As engineers we aren't taught how to be leaders. The series has been helpful to open my eyes."

"The variety of topics was vast, yet applicable. The once a month meeting was also good for time to implement session take-aways between sessions."

"It was very helpful to hear presenters reinforce my experiences and give specific advice."

“The ACEC leadership series provided a variety of speakers and topics that were both compelling and immediately applicable to developing leadership skills. The sessions were interactive and I was able to take away something useful from each one. I would recommend this series to anyone looking to develop tools for business development, developing professional relationships, and management skills.” –Amy Jones, Project Manager, OBEC Consulting Engineers

"It was helpful in getting exposure to different elements of the industry."
COST - $1600 for ACEC members
Firms have the option to send different people to different sessions; however, sending one individual to the entire series is recommended for creating continuity in the learning process and developing regular relationships with industry peers.

SESSION 6 - April 3 (2.5 hours)
Profitability & Risk Management in Engineering Practice

Engineers often feel that they are between a rock and a hard place when it comes to risk management and profitability. If they follow all of the risk management advice they are given; e.g., "only sign 100% insurable contracts," "don't do business with difficult clients," "send CYA letters about everything"-- they risk losing clients and projects. But engineers are also aware that one claim can have devastating impact on the firm's profitability in the form of a (often quite large) deductible obligation, lost time, damage to reputation, and the like.

In this interactive session, we’ll offer practical strategies for managing the risks inherent in professional practice, illustrated with real-life claims and examples. Participants are encouraged to bring problems and situations for discussion.
