ACEC / Southwest Washington Public Agency Liaison Committee Meeting

PRESENTATION
Fish Passage and Floodplain Restoration in Southwest Washington: Lessons Learned from Past Projects and a Look at What’s Next

Fish passage barriers and degraded stream and floodplain habitat remain among the biggest obstacles to salmon and steelhead recovery in the lower Columbia region, and many of them sit right in our backyards. Chris Collins will walk through the Lower Columbia Estuary Partnership’s recent work in Southwest Washington, including large-scale floodplain reconnection like the recently completed East Fork Lewis River Reconnection Project, and share what it takes to work with diverse partners to move these projects from concept through permitting, design, and construction. He’ll also preview upcoming projects in the pipeline and discuss opportunities for public agencies and consultants to collaborate on future barrier removal and restoration efforts.

PRESENTER
Chris Collins, Restoration Program Lead, Lower Columbia Estuary Partnership
Chris Collins leads the Lower Columbia Estuary Partnership's restoration program, where he has identified, designed, constructed, and monitored habitat restoration projects since 2009. An aquatic ecologist by training, Chris brings nearly three decades of experience across the Rocky Mountains and Pacific Northwest, managing all phases of natural resource projects from stream restoration to stormwater management. He led the Steigerwald Reconnection Project in Washougal, WA, the largest habitat restoration project ever completed on the lower Columbia River, which realigned a 5.5-mile federal flood protection levee to reconnect 965 acres of floodplain and open the area to salmon and lamprey for the first time in generations. He holds an Master's Degree in Water Resources from Duke University and a B.S. in Biology from The Citadel. Before joining the Estuary Partnership, Chris was a Project Manager at Parametrix.
